Today in the News:
– Shanghai murders chickens over bird flu
– Yet another TSA blunder at JFK Airport
– and Korea Crisis escalates
Chinese officials in the city of Shanghai have ordered the temporary closure of its poultry markets due to the H7N9 bird flu outbreak. The city has already begun a mass slaughter of poultry after the virus was discovered in pigeons at a market. Six people have died in this latest outbreak. The H7N9 virus is a form of avian flu not before seen in humans. The World Health Organization says there is currently no evidence of human-to-human transmission, but Shanghai is currently monitoring another person, who was in close contact with one of those who died after showing flu-like symptoms. Officials ordered the slaughter of at least 20,000 birds, after the virus was detected in pigeons sold in Huhuai market.
AppArently, blundering TSA workers let a JFK Airport worker who didn’t have a boarding pass get on a jet to Florida without being screened. Marcelino Aponte, of The Bronx, had a reservation on Delta Flight 2159 from JFK to Orlando Wednesday night. But he had no boarding pass and nor proper ID, and federal TSA screeners turned him away at a security barrier. So with no further ado, Aponte, a Delta employee, used his work ID to make his way to the jet via the airport’s secure areas. I mean why not he has the authority to do so right?! NOT! Agents lost track of Aponte, and TSA officials allegedly waited until 45 minutes after the breach, to call Port Authority cops, which didnt give them enough time to apprehend Aponte and he took of on the flight. Aponte never cleared airport metal detectors, and his hand baggage was never searched. Well good to know the TSA has our back – when we dont have a boarding pass and dont feel like going through screening.
It looks like things are getting serious in the tension between North and South Korea. A day after the North moved a missile to its east coast, South Korea has deployed two warships with missile-defence systems. Military officials told South Korean media the two warships would be deployed on the east and west coasts. Seoul has played down the North’s missile move, saying it may be for a test rather than a hostile act, but if we take into account the recent rethoric of Pyongyang, we might as well expect the worst at this point. Reports today said the North had moved two missiles, and had loaded them on to launchers. Russian diplomats said the North’s foreign ministry, had asked them to consider evacuating their Pyongyang embassy. And you know when Russians get warned to evacuate something must be up.
