Kate Middleton is pregnant with the future king or queen of England — who will be the first royal child born under gender-neutral rules. Prince William and his wife announced the greatnews yesterday, after she was hospitalized with morning sickness. The child, Will’s and Kate’s first, will be third in line to the throne behind Princes Charles and William. His or her ascension will mark a historic day for the monarchy. Leaders of the 16 commonwealth countries last year approved changes to a 3-century-old rule, to make the king’s firstborn the heir to the throne, regardless of whether it’s boy or a girl. Previously, the crown went to the royal family’s oldest son. The only way a girl could ascend was if she had no brothers, as was the case for Queen Elizabeth II. And just in case you were wondering, if Kate has twins, the first one that comes out will be heir! And here an example of what these twins could look like! Congratulations to the royal couple!
Swiss authorities warned the intelligence agencies in the United States and Britain, that their data could have been compromised, by a disgruntled senior NDB IT technician, who committed a massive data theft. Swiss authorities arrested the technician suspected in the data theft last summer amid signs he was acting suspiciously. He later was released from prison while a criminal investigation by the office of Switzerland’s Federal Attorney General continues. Swiss authorities believe he intended to sell the stolen data to foreign officials or commercial buyers. The NDB, or Federal Intelligence Service, is part of Switzerland’s Defense Ministry, and intelligence services like the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6, routinely shared data on counter-terrorism and other issues with the NDB. Swiss authorities informed U.S. and British agencies that this data could have been compromised. I’m sure there are a couple of people out there who would have loved to get their hands on this.
The Vatican revealed the new personal Twitter account for Pope Benedict XVI, @Pontifex, meaning the leader of the global Catholic Church will officially join millions of people around the globe on the social media site. The pope will answer a question about faith in his first tweet, planned for Wednesday, December 12th. The Vatican said that anyone could send in a question via the hashtag askpontifex or #B16. The Vatican said the initial tweets from the pope will come on Wednesdays in conjunction with his general audiences in Rome, but that the 140-character missals may become more frequent. The Pope’s presence on Twitter is a concrete expression of his conviction that the Church must be present in the digital arena, and the Vatican confirmed that all Tweets will be composed by the Pope himself, so let the tweets begin!
