Greece is planning to spend 10 billion euros to buy back bonds in a bid to reduce its ballooning debt and unfreeze long-delayed aid, setting a price range way above market expectations to ensure enough investor interest. The bond buyback is a key element to the efforts of Greece’s foreign lenders, to put the near-bankrupt country’s debt back on a sustainable footing, and its success is essential to fund Athens needs and avoid running out of cash. Greek government bond prices rallied sharply on the news, with bond prices rising across the markets.
Apparently Delta Airlines is eying the acquisition of a 49% stake of British carrier, Virgin Atlantic, a stake which is Currently owned by Singapore Airlines. Singapore Airlines said today it was in talks with interested parties to sell, and apparently Delta is among the suitors. Delta, the second-largest U.S. airline by operating revenue after United Continental, wants to gain access to Virgin’s landing rights at London’s Heathrow airport. Delta has been looking to acquire a Virgin stake for more than two years but previous talks broke down over price and other issues. Heathrow is the market leader in London and while Delta could give Virgin access to hundreds of markets on a one-stop connecting basis in the United States, for Delta, this deal would put it in a stronger position against key competitors and make it a strong player at Heathrow.
Vampire alert in Serbia! Get your garlic, crosses and stakes ready: a bloodsucking vampire is on the loose…well at least that’s what villagers in the tiny western Serbian hamlet of Zarozje say. Rumors that a legendary vampire ghost has awakened are spreading fear — and a potential tourist opportunity — through the remote village. A local council warned villagers to put garlic in their pockets and place wooden crosses in their rooms to ward off vampires, although it seems it is more designed to attract visitors to the impoverished region near Bosnia. Well now that the final installment of Breaking Dawn has concluded, I can just see bus loads of teenage girls trecking to Bosnia in search of the next hot vampire to fawn over. Sava Savanovic, the vampire of Serbia, might soon get more publicity than anticipated!
On a last note, Google is encouraging us to take a stand for free and uncontrolled internet! According to Google some governments want to use a closed-door meeting in December to increase censorship and regulate the Internet. There are Forty-two countries that filter and censor content. In just the last two years, governments have enacted 19 new laws threatening online free expression. If you would like your voice to be heard, there is a petition you can sign if you google the words take action…(but of course this could also just be a rouse to get our e-mail address information! yo never know…)
