It is decision time in America. Tonight we shall know who the ruler of the most powerful nation will be! No matter who will win. For both Obama and Romney tough tasks will lie ahead, but most importantly you must go out and vote! Your decision will define the country’s course for four years on spending, taxes, healthcare and foreign policy challenges like the rise of China and Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Polling stations opened across the eastern United States and parts of the Midwest this morning, and at least 120 million people were expected to render judgment on whether to give Obama a second term or replace him with Romney. This is your country America, if you have a strong opinion don’t just share it on facebook! Let the ballots know! Luckily you are not in Russia where the future lies in poll rigging hands so once again your vote count so go celebrate that fact and vote!
And speaking of Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin, today announced on television, that he has fired his defense minister, Anatoly Serdyukov, after a multi-million dollar corruption scandal. Instead he appointed a longtime ally and former emergencies minister Sergei Shoigu, to handle military reforms. Sergei Shoigu, is untainted by corruption and seems to be quite popular among Russians. Shoigu has also proved immensely loyal to Putin, and has shown few signs of political ambitions in nearly two decades in senior posts. Good for him otherwise he would go straight to prison, like Kodorkovsky – that would be the worst case scenario…or he would just be pushed into the shadows, like former president Medvedev – best case scenario. Anyways, Putin’s public announcement, appears to show he will crack down on high-level corruption during his new, six-year presidential term. Well and you know how that goes – who ever is against Putin will suddenly have a case of corruption in their records. Those who are with him will have the opportunity to quietly continue their corrupt shenanigans. That’s just how the cookie crumbles in Russia.
We haven’t spoken about Greece for a while…Workers in Greece have launched a 48-hour general strike across the public and private sectors in protest at a proposed new wave of austerity, as MPs are due to vote on the package of salary and pension cuts, and labour market reforms, tomorrow. Greece must back the measures, and the 2013 budget, to receive the next part of a bailout worth 31.5bn-euro, from the International Monetary Fund and European Union, and with that avoid bankruptcy. Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has been having a tough time convincing Greeks that this would be the last time their wages and pension would be cut. So understandably it’s off the the street.
