In a very symbolic and may I say uplifting move, the Norwegian Nobel Prize committee has awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union. Despite its current financial and political crisis, the Norwegian committee recognized the EU’s work over the last six decades of promoting and advancing “peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights”. The committee also highlighted the EU’s work leading to the reconciliation between France and Germany, after World War II and for incorporating Spain, Portugal and Greece into the union, after their authoritarian regimes collapsed in the 1970s. Amidst the current crisis, probably the most important achievement of the Union, is that it has practically eliminated the possibility of war on the continent, and that is definitely something we should all be proud of. EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said on his Twitter feed: “It is a great honour for the whole of the EU, all 500 million citizens, to be awarded the 2012 Nobel Peace prize.” An award that will hopefully boost the morale of some of the Union’s members and remind Europeans why the EU came into existence in the first place.
The current and prospective Vice Presidents, went head to head last night, in the battle to win power over one of the most influential and powerful nations in the world. And it looks like Vice President Joe Biden and Republican challenger Paul Ryan may have scored a draw in their performance. At times it looked like Joe Biden was working very hard to make up for the slightly less passionate debate style of President Obama in his first debate against Romney, and Paul Ryan was kind enough to point that out during the debate. No matter who you will be voting for we definitely got the show that we were hoping for last night! Biden was aggressive, he was passionate and feisty, while Paul Ryan mustered some details about the budget cuts they plan to impose if they get into power. Post your comments guys! Who will you be voting for and why?! Oh and breaking news, Lindsey Lohan has just endorsed Mitt Romney as the president of her choice. Maybe that will help you in your decision?
We shall be able to buy the Galaxy Nexus phone after all! In a blow to Apple, the US Court of Appeals has just overturned a ban on sales of Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus phone. It said the district court in California, which had issued the ban in June, had “abused its discretion in entering an injunction”. A sales ban on Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computer in the US was also lifted. But we are sure Apple will bounce back from these bad news, with the release of a new product. Apparently October 23rd will be the day when we will witness the unveiling of the new iPad Mini. And now we are just hoping that by some holiday miracle, Apple will give us Google Maps back.
