Tragedy has struck Russia, as the death toll after the flash floods in the Krasnodar region, rose to 171 people. One of the most affected towns is Krimsk, and president Putin did order an investigation into whether the Krasnodar population was given appropriate and timely warning signals, which obviously it did not, in my opinion. The flash flood did arrive in the middle of the night, but according to some reports, people were given little to no warning. According to Russian officials more than 5,000 houses are completely under water, and over 24,000 people are directly affected by the floods. This is a New Orleans type of flooding situation, except that people were not provided with pre-emptive evacuation options, as was the case mostly, albeit delayed, when Hurricane Katrina hit. This is indeed very sad news. Our thoughts are with you Krasnodar.
Bank of England is finally under fire, to reveal just how much, British officials, knew about the interest rate rigging, that was going on at Barclays. Paul Tucker, the debuty governor of Bank of England, will testify today, in front of a parliamentary committee, in an attempt to clear his name and save his potential career as next governor of the Bank of England. Apparently it was Mr. Tucker who was questioning Barclays high interest rates, in 2008, which was then misconstrued by one of Bob Diamond’s executives, as a green light, to show lower interest rates, i.e. manipulate the LIBOR. I am very curious to see how he will get out of this one!
The UN rolled out the big guns against Syria, and sent UN and Arab League envoy, Kofi Annan, to talk some sense into President Bashar al-Assad. According to public reports, the talk went very well, and an agreement had been reached to end the violence. The ceasefire hthat was supposed to start mid April this year between al Assad’s army and the opposition, was not successful and just this Sunday a reported over 100 people lost their lives. Kofi Annan’s opinion is that instead of focusing on Russia’s unwillingness to participate in sanctions against, Syria, the international community should go back to political mediation. Will be a tough mediation, with the opposition desperate for President Bashar al Assad to leave, and with Mr Assad vehemently refusing to do so.
He was on a roll, Andy Murray was, when he almost snatched that Wimbledon trophy, starting with a great first set, and the stadiums’ support. But, it was not his time this year, in fat it was Federer’s time to win his 7th Wimbledon title, and smother us with his modesty, stating he is not the greatedt player of all time. Of course you are Roger, who are you kidding?!? And we love you for it. I would have loved to see a play off between Federer and Djokovic, in the final, but something about Murray moving ever closer to fulfilling the British people dream of finally seeing a Brit winning their own grand slam, just warms my heart! Better luck next time Murray!
