Today in the News:
– iPhone are attacked via bogus charger
– Obama takes action to curb frivolous patent lawsuits
– and Putin plans to support a ban on adoptions by gay couples
Security researchers say, that Apple iPhones can be taken over with “alarming” ease, using a custom-built charger. Using the bogus charger, a team from Georgia Institute of Technology managed to infect a phone with a virus in less than a minute, and any device using Apple’s iOS operating system would be as vulnerable to infection. To show how easy it is to infect an iPhone, the team created their malicious charger using a tiny bare-bones computer called a BeagleBoard that costs about $45. They should charge big money to show Apple how to avoid future hacking of its iOS operating products.
President Barack Obama took steps on Tuesday aimed at curbing what the White House called frivolous lawsuits over patent infringement, directing his administration to craft new regulations and urging Congress to pass new laws. The president’s package of proposed legislation and rule-making takes aim at suits brought by companies – disparagingly called “patent trolls” – that do not make or sell anything but merely license patents and sue others for infringement. Such lawsuits have ballooned in recent years, creating expense and aggravation for businesses, particularly in the technology sector.
President Vladimir Putin will back a ban on same-sex couples from abroad adopting Russian children, dismissing Western criticism of the way homosexuality is treated in Russia. Putin also called for tolerance, but his remarks, highlight a rift between Russia and many Western governments over gay rights. Legislation allowing only “traditional” foreign families to adopt Russian children, would be submitted to parliament this year. Same-sex couples are not recognized under Russian law and cannot adopt. Putin, who faced protests by supporters of gay rights on a visit in April to the Netherlands – the first country to allow same-sex marriage – said he was tired of being pressed on the issue. Well he better get ready for more!
