Today in the News:
– the US accuses China government and military of cyber-spying
– Lauryn Hill is jailed for tax evasion
– Bill Clinton tried to broker Led Zeppelin reunion
A US report on China says China’s government and military have targeted US government computers as part of a cyber espionage campaign. Intrusions were focused on collecting intelligence on US diplomatic, economic and defence sectors which could benefit China’s own defence program. This is the first time the Pentagon’s annual report has directly linked such attacks to the Beijing government. While China has long been suspected of a role in cyber attacks, the US has generally avoided publicly attributing attacks to the Chinese government, or confirming that US government computers have been targeted. So now it’s official ladies and gentlemen. China on the other hand calls the report flawed, and said it was opposed to cyber-crime.
Singer Lauryn Hill has been sentenced in the US state of New Jersey to three months in jail for tax evasion. The Grammy-winning singer, also faces three months of home confinement, after pleading guilty last year. Hill failed to pay taxes on about $1.8m (£1.2m) of earnings between 2005-07. In a statement to the judge, Hill said she had intended to pay the taxes but could not after withdrawing from public life and ending her music career to raise her children. Hill has six children, five of whom she had with Rohan Marley, the son of Bob Marley.
The CBS “60 Minutes Overtime” webcast reported yesterday, that former president Bill Clinton, was enlisted to ask the British rock gods, Red Zeppelin, to get back together last year for the Superstorm Sandy benefit concert in New York City. He asked, and believe it or not they said no. David Saltzman of the Robin Hood Foundation says he and film executive Harvey Weinstein flew to Washington to ask Clinton to make the plea. Led Zeppelin’s surviving members Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page were in Washington just before the Sandy concert for the Kennedy Center Honors. There was no immediate explanation why Zeppelin turned down the chance to help storm victims, but the three surviving members of the band have not played together since 2007. Zeppelin, a pioneering hard rock band best known for hits like “Stairway to Heaven” and “Whole Lotta Love,” officially broke up in 1980 after drummer and founding member John Bonham died.
