Today in the News:
– A Cyprus bailout Deal has been reached in Europe
– Michael Bloomberg funds $12m US gun law campaign
– A lucky trucker wins the $338 million
Eurozone finance ministers have agreed a 10bn-euro bailout deal for Cyprus to prevent its banking system collapsing and keep the country in the eurozone. The country’s second-biggest bank – Laiki (Popular) Bank – will be shut down and deposit-holders with more than 100,000 euros ($130,000) will face big losses. Deposits under 100,000 euros will be “fully guaranteed”. Laiki will be split into “good” and “bad” banks, with its good assets eventually merged into Bank of Cyprus. The new deal will not be put to a vote in the Cyprus parliament, and now the little island will be facing a deep recession with many businesses to shut. Time to tighten your belts dear Cypriots, while Europe takes a sigh of relief with its shares rising.
After the ban on military-style assault weapons, was dropped from the bill last week due to insufficient support in the Republican-led House of Representatives, gun control advocates are now focusing on another of Mr Obama’s proposals – to implement wider background checks on people purchasing firearms. Currently, around 40% of gun sales – among them those conducted at local gun shows – are exempt from such checks. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is bankrolling a $12m advertising campaign for tougher gun control laws. The television adverts will run in 13 states and urge voters to persuade their senators to back comprehensive background checks for gun buyers. Mr Bloomberg, a strong supporter of gun control, has said he is cautiously optimistic of winning over Congress, which votes on the issue next month. But his campaign has been dismissed by the NRA. I really don’t understand why the NRA would be against stricter background checks. it’s for everyones safety!
The sole jackpot-winning ticket in Saturday’s $338 million Powerball lottery was sold to a big-rig driver at a New Jersey Turnpike truck stop, according to a manager at the store. Although Jersey state lottery officials would not name the winner — nor the store where the ticket was sold — the store manager says he verified with Powerball organizers that he did, in fact, sell the winning ticket. Lottery officials are expected to reveal more about the jackpot in a press conference today, including, possibly, the identity of the mystery truck driver. A lump-sum payout for the Powerball jackpot would come to about $221 million. And me? I won 4 dollars!
