Michael Letterlough Jr. is an Award-winning fashion, commercial and portrait photographer whose work has been seen and published in national and international magazines such as Vogue Italia, GQ, Vibe, Sister2Sister, Jet, Upscale, Essence and MAMI Magazine to name a few; as well as international selling CD and book covers, clothing ad campaigns, top modeling agencies, and countless celebrities—including Janet Jackson, Beverly Johnson, Marsha Ambrosius and Russell Simmons.
Michael’s artistic journey began when he was just a kid, sketching portraits, cartoon characters and capturing scenes from his imagination with pencils, markers and paint. By the time he was 12, he had already began displaying and selling his artwork in galleries. He also became a young, nationally published poet and won numerous essay and writing contests. Although, it wasn’t until he took a photography course in college, while pursuing his passion for writing as a magazine journalism major, that his gift for photography was unveiled.
“I just wanted to be a writer,” Michael says, “so photography was the furthest thing from my mind. But when I began learning it—the process of capturing images on film, developing it all in a dark room and then seeing it slowly come to life, it was like magic to me! That was my beginning. Once I started learning digital photography I was hooked! It was like a drug; instant gratification…and I couldn’t get enough of it.
“But shooting digital photography and 35mm film are two different things, so I primarily taught myself how to shoot digitally, using what I learned in the photography course I had in college. And the retouching and editing process of digital photography actually reminds me of my days drawing—working with shadows and light, blending colors with paint and pencils, adding or taking away various elements of an image as I see it in my mind, and just making faces look as beautiful, natural and perfect as I saw them.”
His photography has been described as sexy, creative, clean, imaginative, awe-inspiring, passionate, vibrant and bold. From exceptional lighting, well-thought-out concepts, vibrant colors and flawless, high-quality editing and retouching post production work—which Michael takes pride in still doing himself—his photography is quickly making him one of the most highly sought-after photographers in the industry today.
“I come from a family background of artists, so art is in my blood. And one of the most important things they taught me was to do what makes me happy and to always be true to my art,” he says. “This might sound grandiose, but one of my goals is really to be revolutionary; to continue to grow in my craft, because I believe that never ends; and to keep striving for greatness. I just want my work to inspire other artists and people everywhere.”
