Today in the News:
– Tehran is waging war on freakishly massive rats
– New York City is giving birth control to city rats
– and China Destroys Nearly Two Tons Of Ikea Chocolate Cake
Tehran has a rodent problem. A big one. Rats not only easily outnumber the city’s residents, they’re also monstrously large. Apparently these vermin can weigh up to 11 pounds—more than some cats. Way back in 2000, the BBC reported that poisoning the rats, which makes them thirsty and forces them underground as they search for water, didn’t work. If anything, it seemed to make the rats stronger. According to an environmental adviser to the city council, the rats are bigger now and look different. Changes that normally take millions of years of evolution. Now, in addition to chemicals, officials have deployed sniper teams equipped with infrared lights for nighttime hunting. I am only wondering what these rats have found underground that made them acquire Hulk like properties!
Meanwhile in New York City the war with normal sized rats has taken a new twist. The MTA is investing in a new method to curb the number of rodents in the New York City subway. The agency has hired SenesTech, a pest control company, to test a new rat bait that acts kinda like birth control, inducing early menopause in female rats and thus preventing them from reproducing. Although funding for the costly program is coming from the National Institute for Health, some believe the $1 million should be spent elsewhere. And I am definitely not one of them – New York City’s subway system is rat infested and they need to go! $1 million is a small price to pay in my opinion.
Chinese authorities have destroyed nearly two tons of chocolate cake, imported by Sweden’s Ikea for violating food quality standards. The Shanghai quarantine bureau said this week that Kraft cream cheese and 2.7 tons of Nestle chocolate bars, were also among dozens of imported products destroyed in its latest round of quality inspections. Ikea pulled the cakes in 23 countries Tuesday, after Chinese authorities found excessive levels of coliform bacteria, which is present in fecal matter. Wow Ikea – first Horsemeat meatballs and now fecal matter in your cakes? If China has to point out poor quality food in mass produce, then things a really going down hill.
