    Today in the News:
    – US Marines drink snake blood in Thai training exercise called ‘Cobra Gold 2013
    – Google Glass functionalities are revealed
    – and Sony previews powerful Playstation 4

Women in the US won the right to join men in battle, but they were probably not expecting snake blood to be part of the hazing process. A group of US Marines, including several female leathernecks, had to drink the blood of live cobras in a gut-churning, “Fear Factor”-style training program in Thailand. More than 13,000 military personnel from seven different countries took part in the survival-skills event in the jungles of Thailand. In the 10-day drill, soldiers not only catch and eat snakes with their hands, but chow down on bugs and slaughter chickens to stay alive. The multinational training program aims to improve military relationships among countries with similar goals, and includes troops from Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and Malaysia. So I guess it’s all in good spirit.

Google released a video on Wednesday that gives fans a glimpse of “how it feels” to wear the reality-augmenting headgear. The video uses trapeze artists, ballerinas, skydivers, and skiers to showcase the planned user interface and some new useful features that might just make the project more than just a novelty. The hands-free device is activated when users say the catch phrase, “OK Glass.” Those words unlock a number of functions — everything from voice-activated Google image searches to video recording. Glass can transcribe your spoken words and send them out as text messages. Pretty cool invention I would say, but how many car accidents will there be once people start using the glass while driving?

Sony fired the first shot in the next round of the console wars last night, previewing a powerful new version of its Playstation system with greater online and social media connectivity that is meant to drive sales back up as it competes with Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo’s market-leading Wii. The new Playstation 4 system was previewed at a much-hyped event in New York. Among the new features, including beefed up graphics, is a new controller with a button that allows players to share video game clips and give friends the to ability to watch each other progress through games. How much the new console will cost or when it will be released remains to be seen.
