Today on CPreports JPMorgan cuts Dimon’s bonus on “Whale” trade, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announces he is stepping down from his post, US scientists say that 2012 was among the 10 warmest years and The House of Representatives approves $50.5 billion aid to victims of Superstorm Sandy.
JPMorgan’s board of directors cut CEO Jamie Dimon’s bonus in half following an investigation into the company’s $6.2 billion “London Whale” trading loss. Dimon’s pay was slashed even though JPMorgan’s fourth-quarter net income jumped 53 percent, and earnings for 2012 set a record. Fourth-quarter results were helped by increased mortgage lending profit and a decline in costs for bad loans. The trading loss, which was suffered primarily in the second quarter of 2012, has been a major embarrassment for the company. But let’s see what a salary slashing for someone lie Jamie Dimon actually means. Basically in 2011 Dimon was paid $23.1 million, with a salary of $1.5 million and a bonus of $20 million. This year Dimon made only $11.5 million, same salary of $1.5 million but this time a bonus of only $10 million. Boohooo…
Rumor has it that Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who helped lead the government’s response to the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history, will announce he is stepping down from his post. Salazar is the second Hispanic cabinet member to leave the administration, following last week’s resignation by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis. Reportedly President Barack Obama had wanted him to remain at the department, which has a key role in regulating industries such as energy and mining on public lands. Salazar is expected to leave the administration by the end of March to return to his Colorado ranch. The former Colorado attorney general was thrust into the national spotlight in April 2010 when a blowout on the Deepwater Horizon rig caused an explosion that killed 11 workers in the Gulf of Mexico. In the aftermath, BP’s Macondo well spewed more than 4 million barrels of oil into the Gulf, as BP struggled to cap the well for nearly three months. Facing an unprecedented environmental disaster, Salazar famously pledged to keep a “boot on the neck” of BP during the response efforts.
US scientists say that 2012 was among the 10 warmest years the world has experienced since 1880.
Nasa researchers said it was the ninth warmest year while experts from another American agency said it was the 10th. They were equally certain carbon dioxide had been the principal driver of the rise over the past 50 years. Most areas of the world had higher than average temperatures in 2012 while the Arctic experienced a record breaking ice melt. Was Al Gore right after all?!
The House of Representatives approved $50.5 billion in long-delayed federal disaster aid to victims of Superstorm Sandy, but not before Republicans flexed their budget-cutting muscle to strike some spending provisions. The House approved the aid in two parts – $17 billion in funds to cover immediate disaster relief needs and $33.5 billion in longer-term reconstruction funds.
