U.S. prosecutors charged two former UBS traders with taking part in a multi-year scheme to manipulate Libor and other benchmark interest rates, making them the first individuals to be criminally charged in this international banking scandal. The charges against the two traders, Tom Hayes and Roger Darin, resulted from a broad investigation into the activities of more than a dozen banks in the setting of prices for Libor and related rates. Literally one day after UBS agreed to pay a record breaking $1.5 billion to regulators in the United States, UK and Switzerland, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) said the bank was being probed over its submissions of interbank rates there, meaning UBS might have to pay out some more fines.

An American university student is the new Miss Universe, defeating dozens of contestants from six continents to bring the crown back to the U.S. after a drought of more than a decade. Twenty-year-old Olivia Culpo won the title Wednesday night at the Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip, replacing outgoing champion Leila Lopes of Angola. The Boston University sophomore’s coronation ends a long losing spell for the U.S. in the competition co-owned by Donald Trump and NBC. An American had not won the Miss Universe title since Brook Lee won in 1997. Miss Philippines, Janine Tugonon, came in second, while Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero, placed third. Congratulations ladies!

President Vladimir Putin supported a ban on Americans adopting Russian children on Thursday in a feud over a U.S. human rights law which he said was poisoning relations. In his first annual news conference since he began a new six-year term in May, next to other issues he was asked about the current spat with the US. Putin described as “unfriendly” the legislation signed by President Barack Obama last week that will punish Russians accused of violating human rights by refusing them visas and freezing their assets in the United States. “This, of course, poisons our relationship,” he said of the measures, drawn up because of concern over the death in a Russian prison of anti-corruption lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in 2009. Putin signaled that he would sign a new tit-for-tat law, proposed by Russia’s lower house of parliament to prevent Americans adopting Russian children as well as barring entry to U.S. citizens accused of abusing Russians’ rights. You have got to be kidding me!
