Former BBC director general Mark Thompson, will be taking over the New York Times newspaper, as chief executive and president. Mr Thompson was in charge of the BBC from 2004-2012, covering the British corporation’s TV, radio and online services. He starts amid one of the worst crisis in the history of the BBC, which forced his successor George Entwistle to step down. Entwistle resigned, after a Newsnight program report led to a former Tory treasurer being wrongly accused of child abuse. Thompson himself faces questions over the BBC’s earlier decision to shelve a Newsnight program about sex abuse claims surrounding the late BBC presenter Jimmy Savile. The New York Times, has been without a chief executive since Janet Robinson stepped down in December 2011, lets see if Thomson will be the right choice.

Ah finally justice will be served! After our recent report on how Starbuck evades taxes in the UK – UK lawmakers will now question executives of Starbucks, about how they have managed to pay only small amounts of tax in Britain, while caching in billions of dollars worth of sales. Looks like Starbucks is not the only wrong doer though, Google and Amazon seem to be guilty of the same offense. The Public Accounts Committee, which is overseeing government financial affairs, has invited the companies to give evidence as mounting public and political concern demands an explanation regarding tax avoidance – not to say evasion! – by big international companies. And just as recap to reminds how bad it is – Starbucks has not paid corporation, or income, tax in the UK in the past three years. The world’s biggest coffee chain paid only 8.6 million pounds ($13.74 million) in total UK tax over 13 years during which it recorded sales of 3.1 billion pounds, which is almost 5 billion dollars.
